Winter Greetings from Master Wu 2018

Dear Qi-friends,
Winter greetings from sunny, chilly Sweden!

I hope you will enjoy as much nice weather as possible before the cold and damp weather kicks in.

According to Chinese cosmology, the 2018 winter season officially begins November 7, 2018.

Don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy some fine weather over the next couple of weeks! On November 22, 2018, true winter weather, with cold, storms, rain, and snow will be our reality in most areas in northern hemisphere.

The winter may take its toll

This winter energy will likely be difficult for those who have weakness of heart, kidney, and/or spleen function.

For medicine practitioners, you may see an influx of clients suffering from muscle pain.

Build up your inner Fire!

In order to counterbalance some of the deleterious effects of the coming winter Qi, we will all benefit from strengthening our true Fire through our inner cultivation practices.

I suggest Fire Dragon Meridian Qigong,  XinYi (Heart-Mind) internal alchemy and/or Mystical Warrior as great forms to help you to build up and maintain your inner Fire this winter.

Rounding out the end of 2018

In order to support our Qi friends through the winter, I have some exciting training opportunities coming up:

Looking ahead to 2019

We are happy to share that we have some very exciting events already in the works for 2019!

Here are the highlights:

  • We will meet for the fourth session of our JingDao Traditional Daoist Arts program in a residential retreat on the beautiful Oregon coast. All students who have completed sessions 1-3 are welcome to join us March 13-18, 2019.
  • Of all my inner cultivation experiences, the most powerful practices are Fu, or Chinese Talisman. This system is the most highly guarded tradition from my EMei lineage. For the first time, I am offering an EMei Talisman Intensive retreat, to be held in Portland, Oregon March 20-25, 2019. Save $300! Sign up before January 20, 2019.
  • For the first time in five years, I will bring another group of spiritual adventurers to a special cultivation journey to China. All students who have attended a residential training with me are welcomed to join us for the 2019 Daoist Alchemy & Hidden Immortal Sword Form trip on the most sacred mountain in all of China. The retreat dates are October 11-21, 2019. Save $700! Sign up between January 1-March 11, 2019.

A Winter Gift for You

After holding this information mostly secret since I moved to the United States in 2001, I have decided to make my article on the Advanced Meanings of the Pure Yang Mudra available for sale.

Those of you interested in the relationship between Daoist Internal Alchemy and Chinese Medicine may be interested in checking it out!

Healing Qi to you and your families,

Master Wu

Autumnal Greetings from Master Wu 2018

Dear Qi friends,
Strong thunder autumnal greetings from Sweden!

A welcome relief from the heat

After several months of record heat, no rain and dreadful wild fires breaking out all over the country, here in Sweden we just recently began receiving some drops of heavenly water.

Hopefully the rain will start to replenish the dry, thirsty land. I anticipate that here in Sweden, we will see our fill of rain and thunderstorms this coming season.

Strange summer on its way out

Although according to Chinese cosmology the autumn season officially begins August 7, 2018, it looked as though the autumn energy descended in our area several few weeks ago.

The excess heat, sun and dryness of the summer months caused the trees to conserve their energy by pulling moisture from the leaves.

We started seeing dry, crinkly leaves losing their green pigment already in the beginning of July! It has been a strange summer.

The clashing of Fire and Water will mellow

The dramatic clashing of Fire and Water energies that strongly affected weather patterns all over the world this summer, with some places experiencing very unusual and severe heat waves, and other places, very unusual and severe flooding, will begin to mellow out in the coming three months.

However, the relief will come to us looking like the extreme opposite of what we just experienced.

For example, those of us who faced a too hot and too dry summer, the patterns may flip so that the autumn brings excess Water.

Other areas who had excess rains and flooding this summer, might expect an atypically dry autumn.

This autumn will bring Heat/Damp problems internally

Either way, these strange autumn weather patterns will cause heat and dampness problems in many of us internally, the effects of which we may feel at least through late September.

Clinically, expect to see a rise in patients coming in complaining of GI problems, muscle and joint issues, and even depression.

For Qigong practitioners, please focus on forms that help you build up your Earth Qi.

Cultivation opportunities

I will continuing supporting our Qi friends’ cultivation practice by offering several workshops in the United States and Europe this autumn.

Please check my booking site for more details.

A brief look ahead:

Harmonious Qi,

Bright Summer Greetings 2018

Dear Qi friends,

Bright summer greetings from the still chilly Stockholm archipelago!

This year, our family escaped what turned out to be one of the coldest spring seasons in Sweden and enjoyed an unusually early spring in Portland, Oregon (United States) and hot summer weather in Zhejiang Province (China).

When we left HangZhou (the capital city of my home province) in the beginning of April, it was hot – over 30C (85F) – and we were a little surprised as we flew into Sweden to see ice still dominating not just the lake regions but also the Baltic Sea (below)!

In our area, over the last few days, the trees and shrubs are finally swollen with buds and fresh green leaves and the earliest spring flowers have just started popping out.

Nice bright, long days aside, it is almost as though Sweden skipped the whole spring season … or perhaps the spring energy is just starting, indicating that we will skip the summer season?

Summer Begins May 5 – Fire and Water Clash

According to Chinese cosmology, this summer officially begins on May 5, 2018.

As I mentioned in my previous newsletter, we will continue to expect dramatic, changeable weather this WuXu 戊戌 (Yang Earth Dog) Year. These weather fluctuations could reach their peak levels this summer, as the war between Fire and Water escalates.

Stay Balanced!

The cosmological pattern suggests that more people will suffer from heart disease, digestion disorders, and/or skin problems this summer.

Eating plums often throughout the summer will be a good idea for most of us.

As always, the best way to maintain your health and balance is to strengthen your Greatest Medicine – Jing, Qi, and Shen – through your daily cultivation practice.

Harmonious Qi,

Master Wu

Spring Greetings and Happy New Year!

Dear Qi-Friends,

Happy Spring!
Happy Chinese New Year!
Happy Year of the Earth Dog!

…from not-cold Stockholm 🙂

We are excited, getting ready to leave for our annual US spring trip to the Pacific Northwest next week. As I have much to do before we leave, and will be very busy in the US, I am sending this greeting letter a little early.

Earth Dog begins Feb 4 /
New Year starts Feb 16

According to Chinese cosmology, the Earth Dog Year of 2018  will start on LiChun 立春, February 4 at 05:28 (Beijing time), while Chinese New Year’s day this year will be February 16.

As you can see, Chinese Yearly animal sign and Chinese New Year fall on different days. Why so?

Chinese New Years’ day is the first new moon’s day of the first lunar month each year, as according to the Chinese calendar.  The New Year is dependent on the pattern of the moon (Yin energy of Nature).

The animal sign of the year starts on LiChun, which is the beginning of spring season.  The LiChun is dependent on the position of the sun (Yang energy of the nature).

GanZhi and the Yearly Animal Sign

Professionally, we use GanZhi 干支 (Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches) to represent each energetic Year rather than just the simplified animal sign.

Energy of the Dog (Xu 戌)

For this coming energetic year, the Dog animal sign (Earthly Branch) indicates that the specific energetic qualities of nature associated with the Dog (such as intuitive, smart, artistic, cautious, social, honest, loyal, uneasy, evasive, or stubborn energy) will exert their influences on us human beings.

When properly harnessed, Dog energy will help you channel your truthful and creative nature towards completing tasks and striving to achieve your life’s greatest goals.

Left unchecked, Dog energy can easily trap you in some physical or emotional obstacle(s) that will make it virtually impossible to get anything done.

Energy of the Earth Dog (WuXu 戊戌)

WuXu 戊戌 Year of the Earth Dog

Analyzing the energy of the Year’s Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch pair together, however, will give us much greater insight into the cosmological patterns of the upcoming year.

WuXu 戊戌 (Yang Earth Dog) energy suggests that we will have  dramatic, changing weather patterns in the coming year.

The War Between Fire and Water

Beginning January 20, 2018, it has been challenging for Hot Fire energy to take over Cold Water in many areas of the Northern Hemisphere.  This war between Fire and Water will be the typical pattern for WuXu year.

Sudden changes between Water (cold, snow, rain) and Fire (hot/warm, heat, dry) will affect many people’s health, especially for those who have weak heart, lungs, and/or kidneys.

The most extreme time period of this pattern will be June and July.

Warm Diseases / Cold Diseases in the Spring

In the early spring, this Fire energy, in the form of erratic temperature spikes, can easily cause what is known as Warm diseases in traditional Chinese medicine in many people. The signs of Warm disease can be fever, headache, sore throat, cough, vomiting, and/or ulcer.

In the late spring, this Water energy, in the form of dramatic temperature drops, could not only make it difficult for some of the more sensitive plants to flourish, but also cause health challenges for people who have weak liver and/or are susceptible to depression.

DaYao 大藥, Your Greatest Medicine

Please do not forget take your DaYao (the Greatest Medicine – Jing, Qi, and Shen) everyday to help maintain your physical and emotional balance, no matter what we expect the external and internal influences to be.

In order to support our Qi-friends being well stocked in this Greatest Medicine, I have decided it is important to offer as many training opportunities as possible this year, in both Europe and the States.

Autumnal Greetings, 2017

Dear Qi friends,

Autumnal Greetings!

Autumnal greetings from the chilly Stockholm archipelago!

While many places in northern hemisphere have suffered through extreme heat waves this summer, here in Sweden we had a very cool summer.

The Harvest Season

With the cool weather and lots of sunshine, we have been enjoying our whole month of Swedish summer vacation as well as soaking up the abundant life energy around us.

We snapped this photo of a gorgeous purple fir cone on our daily walk the other day – amazing Qi abounds!

Welcome to Flatön!

We are also busy getting ready to welcome several groups of international students who will join us for sessions one and two of our JingDao Traditional Daoist Arts Program and session three of our GanZhi Advanced Daoist Arts Program.

As before, we will be hosting our students on the idyllic island of Flatön, which lies off the dramatic west coast of Sweden.

Cold and Wet – LiQiu立秋 (Establish Autumn) Begins

According to Chinese cosmology, LiQiu 立秋 (Establish Autumn) is the starting point of the autumn season, which this year falls on August 7th.

Cosmologically, the energetic patterns this year suggest that Cold Water will be a strong influence.

In those areas which have been experiencing heat waves, the crazy hot temperatures will settle down soon.  Prepare yourselves for some unusual rainstorms or cold weather during this autumn season.

Your Health and the Seasonal Changes

The weird climate changes coming may cause some trouble for your health.

Clinically, practitioners might see more people suffering from weak Qi/blood circulation, lower back pain, knee pain, and/or heart disease … and unfortunately, even sudden death.

Daily Practice is the Key to Balance

No matter the influences of the environment, continuing your daily cultivation practice is the key to maintaining your own balance.

In order to support our Qi-friends’ daily cultivation practices, I will continue to offer my teachings in the United States and Europe.

Autumnal Greetings 2016

Autumn 2016

One leaf knows it is autumn

Dear Qi-friends,

Autumnal greetings from the peaceful and calm Norrtälje bay (in sunny Sweden)!

In China, we have a famous proverb: YiYeZhiQiu 一葉知龝 , which means ‘one leaf knows it is autumn.’ This red leaf caught my eyes as I was strolling with my daughter in the nature reserve last week … it reminded me that my one month summer vacation (Swedish style) was drawing to an end and that I would be writing this newsletter soon.

Autumn Begins 7 August …

Although autumn begins on August 7, 2016 and the Cold Water cosmological energy might bring some welcomed cooling for a brief spell (especially in those areas that have been experiencing an unusual heat wave), ShuHuoZhiQi 暑火之氣, or Hot Fire Qi, will be in full force before completely retreating around August 25th.

Expect to have some extremely hot days until then! This will especially hold true for those of you who have experienced an uncommonly hot summer these last couple of months.

HanShuiZhoQi 寒水之氣 – Cold Water Extreme

However, HanShuiZhoQi 寒水之氣, or Cold Water energy, will dominate the remainder of the fall season, with some areas experiencing atypical rainstorms, hail storms and/or snowstorms.

Cold Water Caution!

This extreme Cold Water influence may cause some difficulties for those of you who have potential weakness in gastrointestinal function, any kind of joint problem, an over heavy body, poor hearing, and/or lower back pain. This harming influence will be strong from September 22nd through November 22nd.

Cold Water Prevention

To avoid the deleterious influence of Cold Water energy and maintain balance in your life, please center your diet around healthy foods and place more emphasis on eating foods with pungent flavors. Also, please keep up with your daily Qigong practice.

Drinking plantain tea everyday will have special health benefits for most of us during this coming autumn season.

2016 Teaching Schedule Update

In order to support our Qi-friends cultivation, we will continue to expand my teachings in the states and throughout Europe.

Two upcoming retreats full

We are excited that many cultivation friends from around the world will be joining us in our next two upcoming retreats:

1. Our two year GanZhi Advanced Daoist Arts Program, in which I will systematically teach the relationships of the GanZhi to Chinese cosmology, astrology, the Yijing, classical chinese medicine, and internal alchemy, is full. We will be welcoming a international group of students to study here in Sweden every 6 months for the next two years.

2. To commemorate the 15th year of the passing of one my most influential teachers, Grandmaster Yang RonJi 楊榮籍 , I will be sharing (for the first time) the first 12 movements of the HuaShan 24 form. For this training, we will be meeting in a retreat style setting in upstate, New York. Although registration for this event is full, you are welcome to join us for part 2, in October 2017.

Still time to join a weekend course!

There are still a few spaces left in several of my upcoming weekend events this fall (in New York city; in Stockholm, Sweden; in Strasbourg, France; and in Aberdeen, Scotland). If you would like to participate, please check out the teaching schedule on my website for details.

Looking Ahead to 2017

During our extended spring 2017 teaching trip to the Pacific Northwest area of the United States, I will offer several events to support our local Qi-friends in Portland, Oregon…

Fire Dragon Shamanic Martial Arts Form Retreat

For years, students have been asking me to teach them the Fire Dragon Shamanic Martial Arts Form. I have finally decided to offer training of this special form from the EMei Shamanic Lineage. In a five day retreat, we will learn and practice this powerful form, which is based on the Yijing Eight Trigrams Arrangement.

Dai XinYi Chopstick form

I will be continuing teaching the Dai XinYi Teacher Certification series. In the next session, held in February 2017, I will be teaching the XinYi Chopstick Form. Each workshop in this series is open to the general public, to students of all levels, and is offered independently, meaning you are welcome to join us for as many of these trainings as you like, in any order that fits your schedule.

2016/2017 Winter/Spring Highlights

Best wishes for a healthy and happy harvest season from Karin and I,

Master Wu

Happy Longevity Peach Day! … and happy summer :)

Santorini - October 13, 2014

9 April 2016

Dear Qi friends,

Happy Longevity Peach Day! Happy birthday to the Spirit of North! Happy birthday to Grandmaster Zhao!

Traditionally, Longevity Peach Day is the day when the Queen Mother of the West would invite all the immortals to KunLun Mountain in celebration. During the festivities, she offered Longevity Peaches … eating one Longevity Peach was known to bring 3,000 years of life!

Spirit of the North is XuanWu 玄武 – and is also the spirit of Water Element.  In Daoism, we believe XuanWu brings new life energy into the world and protects all beings.

Grandmaster Zhao ShouRong carries the lineage of the Dai Family style of XinYi (Heart Mind) internal alchemy and martial arts system. He was born on this special auspicious day, the third day of the third month in lunar calender.

Karin, Zenna, and I hope the spiritual energies of these two immortals (and Grandmaster Zhao) will bring happiness, health, and prosperity into your lives.

Good News!

I would like to share a couple of pieces of good news with you before I share more about the cosmological influences that will be influencing us all this summer.

  • The registration for our newly launched GanZhi Advanced Daoist Arts program is full! This two year course will be held in Sweden. If you would like to be added to the waitlist, please send us an email.

  • Session three of the Lifelong Training Program is also full! This session will meet at a beautiful lodge nestled in the base of Mt. Adams in southern Washington state (USA).  It will be great to spend a week cultivating with old Qi friends.

  • Our publisher, Singing Dragon, is offering a free online Qigong festivalon April 21-22, 2016. Please check out the link – there will be a lot of interesting information available! For this event, I have donated one of my most popular previously published articles, The Pure Yang Mudra part I.

  • My wife Karin is busy writing the GanZhi BaZi Workbook! This book will provide essential and practical information on Chinese astrology … including the secret method (never before published) of how to calculate the astrology chart without a Chinese calendar book or a questionably accurate GanZhi app. Our goal is for the book to be available during the 2016 winter holiday season.

Summer Greetings

You may be wondering why I am sending you all this summer seasonal newsletter almost one month ahead of schedule. The answer is twofold:

Teaching trip in the Pacific Northwest

First, we will be leaving Sweden on Monday for a long teaching trip in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. We will have an entire month of back to back teachings scheduled, which will prevent me from doing any writing!

Third month of Spring – the Dragon month

Secondly, the third month of spring this season has unusual energetic pattern – one that differs from the general spring pattern I wrote about in my last newsletter. As such, I would like to give you a specific guidance about the upcoming Dragon month:

RenChen 壬辰 (Yang Water Dragon)

Even though many friends who are living in the northern hemisphere have enjoyed some nice warm spring energy, this month, RenChen 壬辰 (Yang Water Dragon), will carry in some Cold Water energy. Some friends may have already experienced snow storms during the last couple of days.

Please still follow my previous recommendations for the spring Qigong practice during this Dragon month.  However, please do not continue eating the cooling foods I mentioned in my Spring 2016 newsletter. Until 5 May make sure to consume food and drink with warming energy, such as ginger tea and adding cinnamon spice to your warming foods (like lamb stew).

Feeling Hot, Hot, Hot!

From the Daoist cosmological perspective, the starting point of the summer season falls on May 5th this year. The energy of Mars will definitely dominate the summer – the power of Fire will be in full effect! I predict that many of us will experience an extremely hot summer, especially during the period of May 20 – July 20. This heat wave could last all the way through to the first month of autumn (until September 7th) in some areas.

Supporting patients through the heat

Clinically, practitioners will see that many of their clients will present with problems relating to heat disease, such as poor hearing, nose bleeds, cough, abscess, skin sores, red eyes, thyroid hyperplasia, sore throat, and even sudden death.

Starting on May 5th, please guide your patients to consume foods and drinks that are cooling in nature.

As I mentioned in my last letter, drinking high quality green tea will be a good choice to help disperse the heat this summer. I recently got some fabulous green tea shipped to me from my friends in China – the first harvest of the year! 🙂

Those of you who are tea aficionados may be able to notice the high quality nature of this tea and even its powerful Qi in the photo down below.

Cultivating with the heat

As always, the best way to maintain your balance throughout all the changes life brings is to continue your daily Qigong practice.

The Monkey Internal Alchemy Meditation practice I have shared before (from my book, XinYi WuDao) is still a powerful choice to help you balance your energy.

Regardless of your specific cultivation practice, please remember this advice:

The enlightened being cultivates while facing brightness

Wishing Peaceful Qi to you and your families from the three of us,

Master Wu

Cultivation yields transformation – come join us!

In order to support our Qi-friends inner transformation process, I am expanding my 2016 teachings. Below please find an overview of upcoming training opportunities. Please click the event name for details.

Happy Spring! Happy New Year!

February 4, 2016

Dear Qi friends,

Happy BingShen 丙申! (The Year of Yang Fire Monkey) Happy Chinese New Year!

Year of the Fire Monkey began 4 February, 2016 at 17:45 (Beijing time)

According to the principles of Chinese cosmology and astrology, a new Chinese animal year or astrological year always begins with LiChun 立春 (Establishing Spring), the moment each year when the Sun reaches the exact celestial longitude of 315 degrees.

Chinese New Year (lunar calendar) is February 8, 2016

In contrast, the Chinese New Year is always marked by the lunar calendar and falls on the day of the second new moon after the winter solstice, which this year, falls on February 8th.

BingShen, Mercury, Mars and Saturn and you …

From a cosmological perspective, the energies of Mercury, Mars, and Saturn will influence our living environment during the Year of BingShen.

According to Daoist Five Element cosmology and alchemy principles, these energies will manifest as Cold Water, Heat Fire, and Wind Wood.

In other words, we will experience dramatic weather patterns this year, with weather patterns shifting very quickly. This pattern will prove difficult for those of you who have weak gastrointestinal function, kidney function, or heart function.

BingShen, Mercury, Mars and Saturn for practitioners …

Clinically, practitioners will see more clients with problems relating to heart disease, diarrhea, hearing, headaches, eyesight, and/or skin problems throughout the year.

As always, I will offer more information about the specific seasonal influences in my future newsletters.

Join me on Twitter!

I have been writing these seasonal greetings for many years now and have had requests from some of you to stay in touch more often.

With this in mind, I have just started sharing some traditional cultivation wisdom with Qi friends through Twitter. Don’t worry, the frequency of my Tweets will not overwhelm you! I post only at those random moments I have an inspiration.

You are welcome to follow me on Twitter @masterwu99

The Beginning of Spring

LiChun also marks the beginning of the spring season. Although spring officially starts today, February 4th, I felt that the warm spring energy arrived earlier than anticipated (last week), at least here on the east coast of Sweden.

This Spring, Expect Heat Fire

Although there will be some cold days interspersed throughout this spring season, it will likely warm up quickly!

The dominant Heat Fire energy in this spring will cause blood, lung, and/or skin related problems for many of us.

Balance the Heat Fire with Cooling Energy

Cooling foods and tea will be good for balancing out the Heat Fire this spring season. I recommend that you enjoy foods like daikon radish and bitter melon regularly.

During tea time, choose chrysanthemum, green, and white teas!

Go to Bed Early!

Even though it is getting lighter and lighter outside, going to bed early will help preserve your Yang energy. It also will make it easier for you to get up early for your early morning cultivation practice!

In general, going to bed early will be great for your health during this spring season.

Maintain Your Health through Daily Qigong

Of course, as I always emphasize, the best way to maintain your balance is to continue your daily Qigong practice. I recommend you try the Monkey Internal Alchemy Meditation practice from my book, The 12 Chinese Animals. The benefits from this practice will be greatly enhanced when you cultivate this energy during this year of the monkey.

Emerging from the Dragon’s Den!

After our annual winter hibernation period, spent focusing on our personal cultivation, we are following the seasonal Qi and have emerged from the Dragon’s Den!

Weekly Qigong in Stockholm

I have started sharing my practice again with Qi friends here in Stockholm with a weekly lunchtime Qigong course.

Of course I will continue my teaching/travel schedule through out the states and Europe this spring!

In Loving Memory of Grandmaster Yang RongJi 楊榮籍

This coming autumn will mark the 15th anniversary of the passing of one of my most influential teachers, Grand Master Yang RonJi.

According to Daoist numerology, the number 15 represents perfect, complete cycle, reunion, or return.

In special honor of his spirit and of the Hidden Immortal Lineage, we are offering a Taiji retreat in southern Washington state (the Pacific Northwest area of the US) this coming April.

In honor of Grandmaster Yang’s spiritual return, we are also offering part one of the HuaShan 華山 24 Form in upstate New York during the spiritual birthday of the Big Dipper constellation (part two will be offered in 2017).

As I have written about the Hidden Immortal Lineage Taiji form in my book, Seeking the Spirit of the Book of Change, I will share a little about the HuaShan 24 Form for you here:

The HuaShan 24

HuaShan is one of the most sacred Daoist Mountains in China. It represents the Metal Element and martial power. The HuaShan 24 is the most simple, yet most challenging and most powerful form I have ever practiced.

I clearly remember the moment Grandmaster Yang began to teach me the HuaShan 24 Form. After many years of training the Hidden Immortal Lineage Taiji form, one on one, he told me that he believed I had mastered the physical aspects of my Taiji form and that it was time for me to find my GongFu 功夫 (meaning inner power) within my Taiji. The HuaShan 24 is the form he taught me in order to help me get to the next level.

Since then, I have practiced the HuaShan 24 to strengthen my GongFu regularly and held the practice secret. For the first time, I am now ready to share the entire form with students. All students who are ready to take this challenge are welcome to join us for part one of the HuaShan 24 in Accord, NY in October!

2016 training opportunities:

For your convenience, here is a brief list of my upcoming teaching events:

I hope you can make it to one of these events! As always you can check my website for updates on my teaching schedule.

Cooling Qi to you and your families from the three of us,

Master Wu

Warm Winter Greetings 2015!

Dear Qi friends,

Happy winter from the misty and mystical Norrtälje bay! Karin, Zenna, and I hope you and your family will enjoy this upcoming white holiday season!

Although winter 2016 officially starts today, I experienced some early snowy moments during my teaching at Northern Dipper Temple in upstate New York in October – a preview of what is ahead…

Get Ready for the Cold!

According to Chinese cosmology, this winter season will be extremely cold in the most areas of northern hemisphere, as compared with the last few winters. I expect this to be especially true in those areas that missed cold weather last winter, for instance, in the Stockholm area, where we currently live.

The Cold Water Qi (manifested as heavy mist, rainstorms and snowstorms) will officially kick in about two weeks from now.

Protect your Kidneys from Cold Water Qi

For many of us, this Cold Water season may be accompanied by joint pain, lower back pain, or/and pain along the spine. This will be especially true for those who have weaker kidney Qi.

In order to preserve and cultivate your kidney Qi, please keep yourself warm over the next few months. It is also a good idea to eat root vegetable stews for dinner and to drink ginger tea in the morning throughout the winter season.

Cultivation for Strengthening the Kidneys

HunYuan Zhuang 混元樁

  • Bend your knees slightly, tuck your tailbone in and tighten your bottom muscles.
  • Curve your back and close your shoulders by bringing them close together in front of your body and sucking in your chest.
  • Bring your forearms and hands together in front of your body (the pinky edge of your hands are together) with your palms facing forward.  The back of your hands rest on your thighs as you hold your arms as close to your body as your can.
  • Keep your head upright with eyesight in horizontal.

  • With each breath, breathe with your lungs, your skin, and your navel.
  • With each inhalation, imagine all the pores of your skin are open and allow the universal Qi, like sunlight, to enter into your body and gather at your navel.
  • With each exhalation, imagine the Qi descends from your navel to your DanTian 丹田 (the elixir field in your lower belly).

Autumnal Greetings 2015

Dear Qi friends,

Greetings from the sunny and cool Stockholm archipelago! After several weeks of long, cold and rainy summer days, everyone is now out basking in the sunshine. Even in the big capital city, it is not at all unusual to see women and men sunbathing in tiny bathing suits in city parks or even just a small patch of grass as soon as the sunlight breaks out of the thick clouds or after chilly storms.

Alternating weather patterns ahead

Actually, this alternating weather pattern of warm/hot and cool/hot will be the typical pattern weather pattern for this coming autumn. Yes, autumn is here! According to Chinese cosmology,  autumn starts today, August 8, 2015!

The effects of excess heat

These climatic variations may cause excess heat in the body, which can weaken heart and kidney function, and be difficult for those who suffer from migraine headaches. Eating fresh watermelon and peaches (in this first stage of Autumn) will help the transition and smooth out excess heat in our bodies

Monkeys and your lungs!?!

Autumn is known as the Metal season and it is a great time for you to spend more time practicing Qigong. As you know, Qigong strengthens your internal and external Qi as well as your lung function. You will be able to easily eliminate excess heat in the body if your lungs are functioning well.

The Monkey cultivation practice from my book, The 12 Chinese Animals will be a great way to strengthen your lungs!
